How did the first PSL season come about?
The tournament was first planned for Doha, Qatar, and was moved to the UAE in September 2015. It was played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai and the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium in Sharjah. The opening ceremony and first match took place in Dubai on 4 February 2016. Five franchises took part: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. HBL was the title sponsor, which is why the season is often written as the HBL Pakistan Super League 2016. Total attendance was 201,609, about 8,400 a match.
What was the PSL 1 format?
The five teams played a double round robin: each team met every other team twice, giving eight league matches each and 20 in total. The top four teams reached the playoffs, which added four matches (a qualifier, two eliminators and the final), so by our count the season had 24 matches. The page playoff system gave the top two teams a second chance, as it still does. See format and playoffs for how the system works.
