How did the PSL 11 league stage work?
The eight teams were split into two virtual groups of four. Each team played the three other teams in its group twice and each of the four teams in the other group once, which is 6 plus 4 matches, or 10 per team. Eight teams playing 10 matches each give 40 league matches (8 × 10 ÷ 2). The group stage replaced the double round robin of earlier seasons.
How did the PSL 10 league stage work?
Six teams played a double round robin: each team played each of the other five teams twice, 10 matches per team and 30 league matches. With four playoff matches that makes 34, the match count of PSL 10 and of the earlier six-team seasons we have checked.
How do the PSL playoffs work?
The top four teams qualify for the playoffs, which use the page playoff system, in four matches.
| Match | Teams | What it decides |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifier 1 | 1st v 2nd | Winner goes straight to the final; loser gets a second chance |
| Eliminator | 3rd v 4th | Loser is out |
| Qualifier 2 | Loser of Qualifier 1 v winner of the eliminator | Winner goes to the final; loser is out |
| Final | Winner of Qualifier 1 v winner of Qualifier 2 | Decides the champion |
What do the last two seasons show?
In PSL 10, Quetta Gladiators finished first and won Qualifier 1, but Lahore Qalandars, who finished fourth, won the eliminator and Qualifier 2 and beat Quetta in the final. In PSL 11, first-placed Peshawar Zalmi won their qualifier and went straight to the final, where they beat fourth-placed Hyderabad Kingsmen, who had won two playoff matches. In both seasons the team that finished second, Islamabad United, did not reach the final. A top-two finish therefore gives a second chance, not a guaranteed place in the final.
How are ties on points settled?
When teams finish level on points, the table is separated using net run rate (NRR), the average runs a team scores per over minus the average it concedes. In PSL 10, Islamabad United and Karachi Kings both had 12 points and Islamabad ranked second with an NRR of +0.372 against +0.049. In PSL 11, Hyderabad Kingsmen, Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings all finished on 10 points. We have not found the PCB tie-break order published, so we do not state it.
